How to find new music before everyone else: 8 habits that work
The people who always seem to hear songs first aren’t lucky. They have habits. Eight of them, and how to start each one this week.

Everyone knows someone who heard the song months before it was everywhere. It looks like instinct, but it is mostly routine: they listen to more new music, in more places, and they pay attention to what happens next. Here are eight habits that add up to an ear, and how to start each one.
1. Give new music a fixed time
New songs arrive every day, but your attention doesn’t. Pick a slot, Friday morning or the commute home, and spend it only on songs you have never heard. Twenty new songs a week, heard properly, will teach you more than a hundred skipped. On Vibnelo the New chart and the For you feed are made for exactly this: short hooks you can judge in thirty seconds each.
2. Listen to the first thirty seconds, then decide
You don’t need the whole song to know whether you want the whole song. Most songs show their hand in the first half minute: the voice, the hook, the feeling. Listening in short bursts lets you cover far more ground, and when something grabs you, you go back for all of it. That is the idea behind every hook on Vibnelo.
3. Follow artists, not only playlists
Playlists tell you what someone else already picked. Following an artist tells you the moment they release something. Turn on notifications for the few artists you really care about, and watch for premieres: on Vibnelo you can wait for a premiere, and the first 100 people who hear it in its first hour become that artist’s Day One fans and hear the drops marked for them a day early.
4. Read the credits
When a song grabs you, find out who wrote and produced it. Many streaming apps now show songwriting and production credits, and the same producer or songwriter often turns up behind your next favourite song. Following people behind the scenes is one of the oldest ways to get ahead of the charts.
5. Listen blind now and then
Names, play counts and cover art all lean on your judgement before you have heard a note. Every so often, take them away. Blind battles on Vibnelo play you two hooks without saying who made them, and the split only appears after you pick. It is a quick way to learn what you actually like, as opposed to what you expected to like. Why our battles are blind explains more.
6. Keep a list, with dates
Write down the songs you think will be big, and the day you heard them. Check back a month later. It is humbling at first and then very useful, because you start to see which of your instincts are right. Pay attention to the songs you replay without meaning to: those are your strongest signals.
Calling a hook on Vibnelo is the same habit with the bookkeeping done for you. You call it with free Vibes, a day later the app checks whether it climbed more than the chart did, and your Ear Score keeps the record. How the Ear Score works has the details.
7. Step one genre sideways, or into another language
The fastest way out of a rut is next door. If you love late-night pop, try gospel hip-hop; if you only listen in English, try a love song in Croatian. Some of the most exciting songs never cross a border because nobody tried. On Vibnelo the Leagues rank hooks language by language, and the genre hubs are a good place to start: late-night pop, Croatian love songs and gospel hip-hop.
8. Share early, and say why
Send the song to one friend the day you find it, with the line that got you. Sharing early is how you find the people whose taste runs close to yours, and those people are the best discovery tool there is. On Vibnelo you can see which hooks your friends liked or called this week, so their ears start working for you too.
